Eighth Grade Artwork
Spray Paint Stencils
Students studied the history and development of stencils and how it has effected the "street art" genre.
8th graders created stencils from logos, photographs and other images. The stencils were then laid over paper and spray painted creating the final image.
Stencils can be used multiple times. This art making process allows students several opportunities for exploration in the medium and experimentation with multiple color choices and image combinations.

Text Portraits
Students used photographs to create a contour line drawing of their face. Once the outlines of their faces have been drawn students added value (lights and darks) to their self-portraits by writing words in pen.
Students used poetry, song lyrics, and words that describe their hobbies, interests and emotions to fill in their portraits and create depth with several different values.

Graffiti
Students used "the graffiti creator" on my website, HERE, to get inspiration for their graffiti images. Students then free-handed the graffiti lettering and added gradients and designs to their lettering.
Students added color with sharpie marker, acrylic paint, oil pastels, and colored pencils. Once the graffiti was finished the words were cut out with x-acto knives and posted on our "brick" wall for display.

Animal Interaction Photo GIMP
These images were created using GIMP photo manipulation software (similar to Photoshop). This is FREE software that you can download HERE
Students found an image of an animal online and "cut" the image from the background using GIMP photo manipulation software. Students then photographed each other and, again, used GIMP to remove the background from their photo.
After selecting a background image students layered their pictures over the background to create the final composition.

Linoleum Block Prints
Students learned about the history of Japanese woodblock prints and linocut prints. After doing some research and finding an image to create students carved images from "battleship" linoleum.
The negative space was cut away using several different cutting tools. Once the "stamp" or linocut was finished, students created 4 prints of their image in different color combinations.
